First, the title of this blog is obviously an homage to Drinking With Bob, who totally rocks. So, what this lacks in originality of title, I hope I can make up in thoughtfulness of content. If you haven't seen them yet, I highly recommend you check out his video blogs. If I can achieve a tenth of the insight, candor, irreverence and humor of Drinking With Bob, I'll be happy.
Second, why am I doing this? Well, I feel I have something worthwhile to say, and I hope I can offer a perspective that is somewhat uncommon, but also logical and valid. At the same time, I hope that I can stimulate a thoughtful dialog on some of the issues of the day, and perhaps answer some questions. I don't understand people. Maybe you folks can explain things to me.
Third, what's it about? Modern Myths. Sometimes it seems like most people live in a fantasy, and this drives me crazy. What I mean is, we are faced with decisions every day. How should I act? What should I do? You might think that people would try to find out as much as possible about the true nature of the world so that we can decide how to act, but we find that too difficult and unpleasant, so instead we shut out the outside world and live in our fantasy world.
Behavior is based on beliefs. And beliefs have nothing to do with facts, or at least very little. Our beliefs come from the totality of our experiences, and that includes myths, dreams and fantasy. Facts are only a small part of the whole picture. Actually, the longer we live, the more we realize that real, irrefutable facts are pretty hard to come by. We are so often disappointed by supposedly true facts that we look for other inputs upon which to base our beliefs. Facts are unreliable, facts can be disproved, but fantasy never lets us down. This situation makes sense from a comfort standpoint, but as a practical guide for how to live our day-to-day lives, it's crazy. And yet, it's fundamental.
I'll admit that I can be a bit idealistic and naive. I like to think that there are certain absolutes in life, right and wrong, black and white, but I realize that there are no absolutes. Especially when it comes to people. People are unpredictable. Maybe that's not such a bad thing after all. I just wish that people made a little more effort to look outside of their fantasy world once in a while to see what's going on in the real world before they charge ahead full speed on a course that makes no sense.
